Problem: Solve the following:

3 2/5 + 4 6/5

Solution Look at the fraction carefully

Step 1:

Solution Simply add the numerators of the fractions and the denominators do not change i.e.

Step 2:

2/5 + 6/5

Solution Add the whole numbers separately

Step 3: 3 + 4= 7

Solution The answer is: 7 8/5

Step 4:

Complete

When denominators are not same:

5 3/2 + 4 7/4

Change the denominator to be the same by multiplying the numerator and

denominator by the same number to make both fractions have

the same denominator and add the whole numbers separately i.e.

5 + 4= 9

Here in above fraction, we multiply both numerator and denominator of

first fraction by 2 i.e.

6/4 + 7/4 = 13/4

The answer is: 9 13/4
