Fraction Word Problems

                    Lesson 1

Problem:                   Sam has twenty books but has only read five of them so far.

What fraction of the books has Sam not read?

Solution                    Read the problem carefully

Step 1:                                   

Solution                    Total number of books Sam has= 20

Step 2:                        Books read= 5

Books which are not read= 20 – 5= 15

Create fraction as: 15/20 = 3/4        

Solution                    The answer is:  3/4

A.	There are 10 songs in the school play, but only 4 song sung by 5^th graders. What fractions of the songs are not sung by 5^th graders?
B.	There are 10 glasses of water. Four are full. What fractions are not full?
