Problem: Add the fractions

2 3/5 + 3 9/5

Step 1: Look at the fraction carefully.

Step 2: Simply add the numerators of the fractions and the denominators do not change i.e.

3/5 + 9/5 = 12/5

Step 3: Add the whole numbers separately.

2 + 3= 5

Solution The answer is: 5 12/5

When denominators are not same:

3 4/2 + 4 5/4

Change the denominator to be the same by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number to make both fractions have the same denominator and add the whole numbers separately i.e.

3 + 4= 7

Here in above fraction, we multiply both numerator and denominator of first fraction by 2 i.e.

8/4 + 5/4 = 13/4

The answer is: 7 13/4
