Adding And Subtracting IntegersWorksheet
Lesson 1
The natural way of counting any objects (say toys) is 1, 2, 3, 4, … 1, 2, 3, 4, … ..
These are
called natural numbers.
Zero means the absence of an object (there is no toy).
Zero and natural numbers together are called whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …..) .
The negative numbers and whole numbers together are called Integers e.g.……. -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4,….

The absolute value of any negative integer is a positive integer

I=4                   I= -4

Properties of Addition of integers.

5 + 3 = 8

5 + 3 = 3 + 5

3 + ( 5 + 5 ) = ( 3 + 5 ) + 5

3 + 2 = 2 + 3 = 5

Properties of Subtraction of integers.

5 – 3 = 2         but   3 – 5 -2

5 – 3      3 – 5

( 5 – 3 ) – 2  5 – ( 3 – 2 )

3 – 0 = 3

Problem:                   Solve the following: 9 – (7 – 4) = ______

Step 1: Firstly solve the bracket i.e. 7 - 4 = 3
Step 2: Subtract 3 from 9 i.e. 9 - 3= 6
Step 3: The answer is:  6

Try two practice problems: Fill in the blanks.

A.      12 – (8-4) = ____
B.      3 + (4 + 5) = ____
