Order Of Operations (2-Step Problems)

                    Lesson 1

A set of rules for arithmetic operations are devised to perform calculations involving more than one arithmetic operation.

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.

Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.

Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

                                                           Problem:                   Evaluate 5 + (6 x 2) using the order of operations.

                                                            Solution                    Firstly solving the parenthesis as 6 x 2 = 12

Step 1:

                                                            Solution                    Then add 12 and 5 i.e. 12 + 5 = 17

Step 2:

Solution                    The answer is:  17

Step 3:

                                                            Complete

                                                            Try two practice problems:

                                                                                               Evaluate each problem.

A. (12 – 4) ÷ 2

B. 6 x (6 - 5)
