Order Of Operations (3-Step Problems) Worksheet
Lesson 1
A set of rules for arithmetic operations are devised to perform calculations involving more than one arithmetic operation.

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.

Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.

Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

                                                           Problem:                   Evaluate 5 + (-5) + 16 ÷ (4) using the order of operations.

Solution                    Firstly solving the parenthesis as

Step 1:

((5 - 5) + 16) ÷ (4)         = (0+ 16) ÷ 4

                                                            Solution                    Then add 0 and 16 i.e. (0 + 16) ÷ 4 = 16 ÷ 4

Step 2:

                                                            Solution                    Then divide 16 and 4 i.e. 16 ÷ 4 = 4

Step 3:

Solution                    The answer is:  4

Step 4:

                                                            Complete

                                                            Try two practice problems:

                                                                                               Evaluate each problem.

A. ((15 – 5) + 6) ÷ 2

B. 5 x ((8 - 6) x 5)
