Surface Area and Volume of Solids and Cylinders

Problem:

Find the surface area and volume of the given prism. 

Solution
Step 1:  

Surface area of a prism = (2 x area of base) + (perimeter of base x h)  

Area of base = ½ x a x b

                         = ½ x 4 x 9

                         = 18 sq cm

Perimeter of base   = Sum of all the sides

                                    = 4 + 9 + 50

                                    = 63 cm

Substituting the above calculated values in the formula

Surface area of a prism = (2 x 18 sq cm) + (63 cm x 50 cm)  

                                           = 36 + 3150 sq cm

                                           = 3186 sq cm

Step 2:  

Volume of prism = ½ x L x B X H

                              = ½ x 4 x 9 x 12

                              = 216 cu cm
