Addition And Subtraction Of Rational Fractions

Problem:                   Solve the problem. Express the result in a + bi form.

y/4 + 2y/8

Solution                    Factor all the given values and find the least common denominator

Step 1:  

Solution Multiply the numerators and the denominators by the appropriate denominator

Step 2:                        so that the denominator becomes the least common denominator i.e.

(2y+2y)/8

Solution Add the numerator i.e. 4y/8 = y/2

Step 3:           

Solution Since the fraction cannot be factored further.

Step 3:           

                                                            Solution                    The answer is: y/2
