Factoring Application

Lesson 1

Problem:

A room has floor space of x² + 5x -6 square feet. If the width of room is (x-1), what is the length?

Step 1: Area of rectangle = Length x Width

Solution = x² + 5x -6

                                                             Step 2:                       = x² + 6x - x - 6

                                                                             = x(x+6)-1(x+6)

                                                                             = (x-1) (x+6)

Solution Since width = (x-1), then length = (x+6)

                                                             Step 3:    

 Solution                     The answer is:  (x+6)

 Step 4:                                                                      

Try two practice problems. Do the following:

A. The square has area x²+ 6x+9, What is the length?

B. A garden is (x+2) meters wide and (x+9) in length. What is the area?
