Problem: How many different 6-letter arrangements are there of the letters in the word FOCUS?
Step 1: There are total five letter positions;
At first place any of the five letters can be placed
Step 2: At second place any letter can be placed from the remaining four letters and so on.
Solution So total possible arrangements are 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 6! = 720
