                     Lesson 1

Problem:                   Write an equation that passes through the points (1, 1) and (3, 5).

Step 1: Find the slope of the line by using the formula, m = y₂ – y₁/ x₂ – x₁

Solution Put the value of x₁, x₂, y₁ and y₂ in formula; (5 – 1)/(3 – 1) = 4/2 = 2

                                                           Step 2:                                  

Solution Write the equation by using formula; (y – y₁) = m(x – x₁)

                                                             Step 3:    

y – 1 = 2 (x – 1); so the equation is y = 2x – 10

 Solution                     The answer is:  y = 2x – 1
