Division Of Polynomials By Monomials

                    Lesson 1

                                                            How to Divide a Polynomial by a Monomial

1. Divide each term.

A)     Divide the real numbers.

B)     Subtract the exponents.

2. If a sign is present, write the sign between the terms.

3. A number divided by itself is 1.

                                                            Problem:                   Divide: 25x5 / 5x3

                                                            Step 1:                    Divide numbers:  25 / 5 = 5

                                                                                Solution                          Subtract exponents: x5 / x3 = x2

Step 2:

                                                                                Solution                           = 5x2

                           Step 3:

                                                             Solution                    The answer is:  5x2

                                                             Try two practice problems:

                                                                                               Divide the polynomials by monomials:

A. 4x4 – 2x3 / 2x2

B. 4xy2 – 6x3y3 / 2xy2
