How to Divide a Polynomial by a Monomial

1. Divide each term.

A) Divide the real numbers.

B) Subtract the exponents.

2. If a sign is present, write the sign between the terms.

3. A number divided by itself is 1.     

Problem:                   Divide: 25x⁵ / 5x³

Step 1: Divide numbers:  25 / 5 = 5

Solution Subtract exponents: x⁵ / x³ = x²

Step 2:                        

Solution = 5x²

Step 3:           

                                                             Solution                    The answer is:  5x²

                                                            Try two practice problems:  

Divide the polynomials by monomials:

A. 4x⁴ – 2x³ / 2x²

B. 4xy² – 6x³y³ / 2xy²
