Undefined Algebraic Fractions

                    Lesson 1

Problem:                   Find the value for “x” that makes the fraction undefined:

                                                                              6xy / 3x – 9

Step 1: A fraction is undefined when the denominator = 0

Solution The numerator is ignored.

Step 2:                        

Solution 3x – 9 = 3 x 3 – 9

Step 3:           

= 9 – 9 = 0

                                                             Solution                    The answer is:  3

                                                            Try two practice problems:  

Find the value for x, y, a, b that makes the fraction undefined.

A. 5xy / 6x - 12

B. 6x + 5 / 10 – 2b
